Sat, 5/17, 7:30 pm - Fanna-Fi-Allah Qawwali at Yoga of Sausalito

An Evening of Truly Ecstatic Sufi Devotional Music
The Return of Fanna-Fi-Allah Qawwali Party!
Saturday, May 17
7:30 pm
Tickets: $20 in advance; $25 day of concert.
www.YogaofSausalito.com

Just back from 6 months in Pakistan studying with their teachers, the legendary family of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in Faislabad Pakistan, these guys (and girl!) are fired up to rock your world!

Join us for a traditional concert of classical qawwali music. This ancient practice of India & Pakistan is used to express the fire of divine love through the verses of sufi poets, sung in Urdu, Farsi, Hindi & Punjabi. Each song embodies the mood of the poetry through sophisticated ragas combined with passionate spontaneity.

Come let your heart be moved and dance to the booming Pakistani tabla, five voices, tampura & harmoniums of Fanna-Fi-Allah.

Unless you've heard them before...

You aint never heard anything like this!

You can listen to samples or purchase a copy of their cd's, "Baba Farid" here and "Annihilation Into the Infinite" here, as well as at Yoga of Sausalito. (To really get a feel, check out the fantastic video of Fanna-Fi-Allah playing in Pakistan to insane, money-throwing crowds on their website, here!)

After 17 years as a commercial photographer I have decided that instead of complaining about the decline in photography as an art form I am going to do something about it. Beginning June 7 I will begin hosting experiential photography Treks in the SF bay area and throughout Northern California. The Treks will teach the art of mindfully designing a great photograph. For more information please visit
http://www.nccenterphotoarts.com.

Hope that you will join me - should be very informative, shared with good people and great fun.
Thanks... Glen

camp in Tuva

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

hello lovelies.
so, this thursday at 7pm, let us gather together here at my humbled
abode (in fairfax) for a potluckish type gather.
the sista circle Lives on!
yea!!
the full Moon calls for our reverence and prayer so i would like to
carpool up to the top of oak manor then walk, together, to the
labyrinth around 830pm for ritual.
i would like for each of you to bring something to share whether it be
an outpouring or a poem, a dance or a song, a chant or a meditation. i
would like, personally, to focus on release as well as creation. this
is an intense Moon already. let this be a healing Moon. a holding
space Moon.
remember that it will be windy up there so bring layers of coziness.
i would like for you all to know that i commit to this circle
happening, rain or shine, show or no show, each thursday before/on the
full Moon at 7pm at my house.
(address changing for next month i will let you know as soon as i know).
this consistency is what will keep it together in the long run.
Bless it.
the dates are listed below for the remainder of 2007.
if you would like to facilitate, PLEASE, just let me know and it will be done.
so many of us and so much to share!
yum.
please rsvp.
pass the word and breathe in community.

The Northern California Center for the Photographic Arts - www.nccenterphotoarts.com - will begin workshops Oct 27 in Santa Rosa and San Francisco the end of January 2008. These will all be taught by experienced photographers / educators who have a genuine understanding of their respective subject. These are not basement classes where a "photographer” is trying to make a few extra bucks, or a camera store trying to sell some stuff. "The Center’s primary goal is to Teach, to Create and Preserve the Art of Photography and the Art in Photography is fading fast.

One of the largest chapters nationwide, it has granted over 4,000 wishes in its 17 Northern California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Marin, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Siskiyou, Solano and Sonoma.

Music is the universal language that speaks directly to the heart, bringing peace & joy to everyone it touches. That peace and joy creates a place where healing can occur naturally...

A five-piece, multiple harmony kirtan, bhajans and mantra ensemble, The Mystic Jamms Band includes veteran sacred musicians Jonathan D. Rosen, Alx Uttermann, Carmen Devida, James Jarvis and Martin Lawrence. Harnessing the healing power of their Shiva-Shakti tradition, the Jamms sing the divine names & magic formulas (bhajan, kirtan & mantra) to unlock your own flow of peace, happiness, and joy.

As usual, there will be stand-alone and sing-along and danceable bhajans, kirtan, and mantras, from this dynamic band of merry songsters!

It was just a calling for us to be walking down the alley and notice the door open to the yoga studio... Thank you again for doing your wonderful work, the world needs you."
www.opensecretbookstore.com
Admission $15
Larisa & Gathering Guru's live performance is a dynamic blend of East meets West. Their show is a mix of kirtan (devotional call-and-response), mantra and uplifting music. They mix the spiritual and sacred with a pop sensibility, sensuality and rock groove like no other--the result is a magic carpet ride. Their engaging style has earned them performance slots at a wide variety of venues including numerous festivals, colleges, yoga studios and spiritual retreat centers. They have performed for many spiritual teachers and leaders including Ram Dass and Deepak Chopra and have opened for such well-known mainstream acts as Berlin, Joan Jett, and Steve Young of The Eagles. Geoffrey Gordon opens the evening and then joins them on tablas as their special guest. Please visit www.larisastow.com to learn more about the band and hear clips off of their latest album "Reaching In." This is their 1st visit to the Northern California area and we just wanted to get the word out to people who would be interested in coming out to experience their music, love and power! Thank you so much! Peace and Blessings--

THU 6/30 -- Art Opening "ROCK+PAPER+SCISSORS" in Sausalito

THURSDAY JUNE 30th

ROCK+PAPER+SCISSORS is an art exhibit in 3 parts at 3 separate, but adjacent venues on Caledonia Street in Sausalito. Each of the three separate art shows will be very different in character from each other, yet will be bound by the relationships espoused by the RoShamBo game. The opening night will be the same for each show, Thursday June 30th from 6-9 PM. The show run through the end of July.

The RoShamBo game, by the way, has surfaced in many different cultures in many different eras. Each time it is a slightly different symbology and a different name, but the circular relationship of each of the objects keeps repeating--and it is always a means of conflict resolution or decision-making when reason draws a stalemate. Do a web search on Rock, Paper,Scissors or RoShamBo and see what you learn.

At our opening will be pouring wines by RoShamBo Vineyards and our food sponsors are: Sushi Ran, Poggio, Saylor's Landing, Cafe DiVino and Mollie Stone's--all of Sausalito.

DIRECTIONS

If you are coming to Sausalito from the north, take the Sausalito/Marin City exit off of 101, turn left under the freeway, then right at the light. You are now on Bridgeway Blvd heading south. Continue through (9) stoplights (the 9th being Easterby Street) and get over to the right lane. Bridgeway will split with the right lane taking a sharp right, then immediately a sharp left. You are now on Caledonia Street heading south. Go to 333 Caledonia Street and park.

If you are coming from the South, Exit Alexander Avenue just after the Golden Gate Bridge. Follow this road (and take in the fantastic views) as it snakes its way down to the water's edge. The street will change names a number of times before finally settling on Bridgeway Blvd. Follow this through downtown. Pass by the Casa Madrona Hotel and the Edith Caldwell Gallery on the left and at the next stoplight (Johnson Street) turn left, proceed one block and turn right onto Caledonia Street. (Actually any of the next few streets beyond Johnson Street will work just fine for turning left). Proceed north (right) on Caledonia to 333 Caledonia Street and park your car.

Hello,

"Bleep Happens" is a short film festival coming up at Rafael Theater. It features five short films written and produced by survivors of brain injury. They are participants at Marin Brain Injury Network's Larkspur Center, a very cool program I was involved with. Participants at the center have a lot to say, and insights to share, as their lives have been irrevocably and drastically changed. www.mbin.org

Thanks,

Laurie

[please pardon my cross-postings]
------------------------------------------
About The Marin Brain Injury Network

Marin Brain Injury Network (MBIN) is a grassroots
organization whose members include survivors of
Acquired Brain Injury, their families and caregivers,
professionals from the fields of medicine and social
service, and other concerned individuals from
throughout the community.

MBIN provides a community reintegration program at The
Larkspur Center in Larkspur, California, near the
College of Marin. The program addresses the
functional limitations and psychosocial barriers that
survivors of acquired brain injury frequently
experience.

"The Glen"
by Glen Bullock

If I were a fruit, I would be a lemon,
because I can be sweet, but I am often sour.

If I were a shoe, I would be a sandal,
because I am comfortable, but not too formal.

If I were a song, I would be, "Amazing Grace"
because the fact that I am alive
proves God's grace.

If I were a car, I would be a racecar,
because I went really fast, and was dangerous.

If I were a color, I would be blue,
like a blue streak.
Sometimes I feel sad and blue.

If I were a land formation,
I would be a large island,
because I am large, but often alone.

Live roots-rock and alt.country come to Guerneville this Friday! FREE!

Bay Area roots-rockers The Famous and Mars Arizona bring the twang to Guerneville this Friday!

THE FAMOUS
It's like The Stones, The Doors, The Cramps all mixed in with Iggy Pop for an arse-kicking mix of swampy, swaggery classic rock-americana-roots rock-country drinking music. Think whiskey-soaked, cigarette-smelling, beat-up southern spirit with an emphasis on perfect hooks, aggressive guitar, irreverent attitude and cackling, "lemme tell you some'in.." vocals.
http://www.thefamous.net

MARS ARIZONA
Mars Arizona melds a roots, alt-country and rock sound that flows well from song to song through the versatility of main songwriter Paul Knowles. Lead vocalist and co-writer Nicole Storto at times sings with the hush and lilt of Sundays’ vocalist Harriet Wheeler, but with the added grit of Concrete Blonde’s Johnette Napolitano.

Mayflower Chorus Performance: Holidays at our House or Franky's Famous Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Our spirited and beautiful choral harmonies fit within the context of a lighthearted original script that is sure to bring out your holiday spirit. This will not be your typical holiday "sleeper" performance. We are a lively group and our shows are a 27 year old Marin tradition; some might even say our shows have a unique "campy" flair.

The show is December 9th, 10th and 11th at 8:00 PM and December 12th at 2:00 PM at The Playhouse, 27 Kensington Road in San Anselmo. You are welcome to buy your tickets at the door or via any of the modalities listed on the website. The website contains pictures and all the information about the show you (hopefully) could ever ask for, including a link with directions.

www.geocities.com/MayflowerChorus

We are a non-profit organization and part of the proceeds from this event will go toward providing music scholarships. We have a lot of fun performing and hope you will come out to support us. (We are always looking for new singers as well! We rehearse Wed nights at the Whistlestop in San Rafael.)

Questions:
1. When you go out to have fun, where are you usually headed?

2. What sorts of events interest you enough to get you to leave your house?

3. What days do you usually go out OR when do you stay at home?

4. What events do you attend regularly?

5. Do you prefer concert halls, bars/clubs, or outdoor events?

6. How much are you willing to spend on tickets? What do you expect to pay?

7. Do you prefer alcohol during events OR do you prefer non-alcoholic environments?

8. What kind of music do you like? (e.g. live music, rock, techno, Indian, classical, anything/everything/don’t know)

9. Do you prefer music, movies, plays, open-mic nights, poetry readings, etc?

10. What previous events come to mind when you think of the perfect night/day out?

- Passes the feather -
